childhood hunger

Did you know that Church of the Holy Family sets aside 10% of the yearly offering from our parishioners to prayerfully grant to nonprofit organizations both in our local community and our sister parish in Haiti.

This act of charity is defined as Tithing, “Generous giving that is an acknowledgment everything we have is a gift from God, and is to be used in His service”.

Hebron Interfaith Human Services runs a school age children’s weekend food backpack program to combat food insecurity for kids identified as at risk.  The program is modeled similarly to a widely adopted “End 68 Hours of Hunger” initiative.  This is an effort to confront the approximately 68 hours of hunger that some school children experience between the free lunch they receive at school on Friday afternoon and the free breakfast they receive at school on Monday morning.

Through our Grant Program, from your Tithing Funds, Church of the Holy family contributes a substantial portion of the money needed to provide between 25–40 packs each week for almost 30 weekends and over school vacation breaks.  HIHS strives to fill them with nutritional shelf stable food items that offer high protein and substantive content ready to eat or simple for children to prepare themselves. The program is well coordinated by a husband and wife team who are parishioners of Holy Family. Their unending dedication to handling the logistics of retrieving empties at our local schools, filling at the HIHS site and delivering back for Friday makes the program a success.  Donations of boxes of instant hot oatmeal, peanut butter or plastic jelly jars, fruit cups, and packaged snacks are always appreciated. These can be left in the HIHS marked section in our Narthex donation wood box.
